Leo Fender came out with the Stratocaster in the mid 50's. He expected the stratocaster to be a futuristic replacement of Telecaster. Though the initial demand for the stratocaster was nothing to write home about, it was apparent that it was a revolutionary design. It took quite a while before guitarists could figure out the setup of Fender stratocaster.
Fender's design took some time to be appreciated by the players of the time but ultimately it went on to become his best ever. It was so far ahead of its time that to date no one has felt any need to make any improvement on the original design of the 50's.
Strat had many features in its design that went on to revolutionize the way guitarist looked at the instrument. There was revolutionary tremolo arm design. It allowed the guitarist to control the pitch of a note by either lowering it or raising it. It helped a player create vibrato.
The setup of Fender stratocaster is highly volatile with regard to how you set the height of the pickup. If you set it relatively far away from the strings, you will get a buzz so loud that it could become intolerable and also sound will be weak. On the other hand, try setting it too close and you will get a distortion of the pitch. There is no perfect way to get the prefect tune as it varies from guitarist to guitarist and their style of playing.
Awareness about your playing style and being comfortable with the instrument should be dictating factors as to how you have your guitar tuned. You may not have all the tools and expertise to get it right. It is prudent to take the help of a professional to get a better and quicker result.
